RCMP was told of Ryan Wedding's imminent arrest days in advance, commissioner says

On Jan. 22, the Mexican government announced Ryan Wedding had "voluntarily surrendered," but RCMP commissioner Mike Duheme revealed that U.S. authorities had warned the RCMP days before Wedding was taken into custody. The operation, carried out on Jan. 23, involved Mexican security forces and the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team, similar to the team that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Wedding, a 44‑year‑old former Olympic snowboarder from Thunder Bay, Ontario, faces 17 federal charges in California for murder and drug trafficking. He was flown on a Justice Department Boeing jet from Mexico to Ontario, California, after the U.S. Office of the FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the HRT’s precision role. The RCMP had sought the fugitive since 2015, and he was added to the FBI’s 10 most‑wanted list in March 2025.
