RCMP medical exam lawsuit: 1,000 recruits allege abuse
1,000 former RCMP employees claim they faced invasive medical exams, citing sexual assault.

On Jan. 19 2026 a class‑action suit will move to Canada’s Federal Court in Toronto, alleging that 1,000 current and former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) applicants were subjected to improper and invasive breast, genital and rectal examinations during mandatory medical screenings. The lawsuit, first filed in 2019 and certified in 2021, names 26 doctors and was sparked by the 1989 assault of 27‑year‑old Sylvie Corriveau, who was forced into an unprotected vaginal and rectal exam while applying to be a 911 dispatcher in Toronto. Lead counsel Megan McPhee argues systemic negligence, citing a 2018 review by Dr. Josée Pilon that noted the invasive checks were dropped in 2006. The RCMP maintains the procedures were “evolving standards” and denies negligence.
