Police Misidentify Teens in Rotherham Crash — Past Tragedy Resurfaces
Police misidentified two teenagers in a December Rotherham crash, echoing a 2018 fatality case.

On 25 January 2026 Sky News covered a case in which South Yorkshire Police misidentified the bodies of 17‑year‑old Trevor Wynn and 18‑year‑old Joshua Johnson after a fatal road crash in Rotherham in December 2025. For three weeks the families of each teenager believed the other had died, and the wrong family was called to the hospital. The error came to light when Joshua’s father realised the victim’s description did not match his son’s. The misidentification recalls a similar 2018 incident when George Crawford, 20, was mistakenly identified by police at an unrelated crash, leaving his family to miss his final moments. The watchdog has launched an investigation, and experts call for stricter protocols.
