On 15 January 2026, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the European Council in Warsaw, warning that if NATO members were to clash over Greenland’s strategic future, it could trigger a “disaster”. Tusk said the island’s vast military and renewable energy potential has drawn interest from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Denmark, whose governments have competing plans for sovereignty and shipping lanes. He added that the situation risked “the end of the world as we know it”, citing the precarious weather, melting ice, and rising military presence. Greenland’s residents are now “holding their breath” as tensions rise amid competing geopolitical interests.
