Peter Mandelson Apologises for Epstein Friendship
Peter Mandelson apologises for staying friends with Jeffrey Epstein after his 2008 conviction.

On 13 January 2026 former UK ambassador to the US, Lord Peter Mandelson, issued a public apology for maintaining a friendship with Jeffrey Epstein after the financier’s 2008 guilty plea to soliciting prostitution from a minor. The apology followed his dismissal as ambassador in September by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, when historic emails revealed a relationship that differed from what the government had disclosed. Mandelson had previously denied awareness of Epstein’s crimes, claiming ignorance, but now says he was “wrong to continue the association” and is sorry for the harm caused. His remarks come amid calls for him to be barred from the House of Lords by the SNP and other parties.
