'People power' opposition supporters shout as voting count in Uganda election turns violent

Sky News Africa correspondent Yousra Elbagir reported from Kampala on 16 January 2026 that voting tallies for the Ugandan presidential election had turned violent. Heavy‑armed troops under General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, surrounded Kibuye roundabout and dragged protesters while gunfire and stun grenades rang out. Opposition leader Bobi Wine claimed the army abducted him after an army helicopter stormed his home, though government spokesmen said he and his wife were safe. Museveni’s 40‑year‑old campaign slogan ‘protecting the gains’ echoed amid nationwide internet blackouts. Violence spread to Kololo tally centre, where more than 300 supporters were taken by police.
