P.E.I. baby’s death investigation stalled, authorities unclear

Winter Elizabeth Acorn, a three‑month‑old born in December 2024, was struck to death on March 16, 2025, by her mother Cassie Acorn in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The infant was airlifted to Halifax, where the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service ruled the death a result of blunt‑force head trauma. Although the death occurred off‑Island, the P.E.I. Office of the Chief Coroner has indicated it would be a secondary role, leaving the primary investigative authority to Nova Scotia. To date, the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service has announced no plan to launch an inquest, and P.E.I.’s Child and Youth Advocate Marvin Bernstein remains undecided. The case follows earlier P.E.I. child‑death investigations, such as those of Olivia Rodd (2021) and Nash Campbell (2015).
