One man dead, police still searching for 2 armed men after shooting on northern Sask. First Nation

On December 30, 2025, a fatal shooting occurred early morning on Big Island Lake Cree Nation, a First Nation community approximately 320 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The victim, identified by his father Larry Wahpistikwan as Neil Wahpistikwan, was shot and killed. The Saskatchewan RCMP confirmed one death and three injuries. Two armed suspects were last seen fleeing on an ATV. The community was placed under lockdown, with a dangerous person alert issued just after 8 a.m. CT and lifted around 5 p.m. CT. Seven health-care facilities in the area were also locked down. The suspects remained at large as of the evening of December 30, 2025. The RCMP described the incident as isolated and deployed resources from across the province.
