Nutrition Key in New Alcohol Abuse Rehabilitation Scheme to Fight Addiction
Healthy eating program helps alcohol addicts recover and avoid relapse.

Researchers at the University of Bournemouth have partnered with charity We Are With You and the Friendly Food Club to launch 'Nourish the New You', an alcohol abuse rehabilitation program emphasizing nutrition. Led by Dr. Chloe Casey, the initiative addresses how alcohol negatively impacts nutrient absorption and appetite. The program provides cooking courses teaching healthy eating, with participants reporting significant physical and mental health improvements. Katherine Johnson, sober for 18 months, credits the program for her recovery, noting weight loss and better skin and hair. Dave Palfrey, sober for 17 months after battling alcohol and heroin addiction, says the food club 'saved my life' and provided his first real friendships. The project aims to secure permanent funding to integrate nutrition alongside conventional rehab methods, building on studies showing healthy diets improve recovery outcomes.
