Nunavut MP Declines to Join Liberals Despite Floor‑Crossing Pressure

Nunavut NDP MP Lori Idlout said on Jan 7 2026 that she will not cross the floor to join the Liberals, despite pressure from Liberal members and some constituents. Idlout, who won the 2025 federal election by just 77 votes over Liberal candidate Kilikvak Kabloona, said the decision weighs heavily on her because it would limit her ability to criticize the government and advocate for Nunavummiut. She cited concerns over the One Canadian Economy Act, Indigenous rights, Arctic sovereignty, housing and health care, and the need for more investment in the Canadian Rangers. Idlout noted that two other MPs—Chris d’Entremont and Michael Ma—crossed the floor last year, bringing the Liberals one seat shy of a majority.
