Nova Scotia community mourns 13‑year‑old killed by dog attack

Drew Nickerson, 13, a resident of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, was mauled by three large dogs—two Cane Corsos and one Rottweiler—while riding his bike on Upper Sandy Cove Road in the Welshtown area on Jan. 3, 2026. He was transported to a Halifax hospital and died two days later on Jan. 5. A grief‑filled community service took place Sunday at the Shelburne community centre, where Rev. Shawn Hatfield spoke and neighbors, teachers, soccer teammates and family members paid tribute. The dog's owners agreed to euthanize the animals following the investigation. A GoFundMe campaign that started at $40,000 now raised nearly $150,000, and messages of support poured in from across Canada.
