Nottingham NHS Trusts Declare Critical Incidents
Nottingham hospitals are overwhelmed, with emergency departments treating 43% more patients than designed.

On Tuesday 13 January 2026, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced critical incidents, citing severe and sustained pressure from rising demand, winter infections and staff sickness since Christmas. NUH’s Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham is designed for 350 patients a day but now sees over 500, a 43% increase, with the busiest day on 7 January 2026 registering 550 patients. The trusts are urging patients to use A&E only in emergencies, postponing elective procedures and opening all beds to ease pressure. These declarations mirror similar incidents across southeast England, Birmingham and Wales, reflecting nationwide NHS capacity challenges amid a winter surge.
