Noem meets Trump over Minneapolis shooting
Homeland Secretary Noem meets Trump to discuss fallout from Alex Pretti’s death in Minneapolis.

On Jan. 23 2026, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and President Donald Trump met for ~2 hours in the Oval Office to address the administration’s response to the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a migrant worker killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis on Jan. 20. Noem had called Pretti a “domestic terrorist,” a claim echoed by White House aide Stephen Miller; Trump later denied endorsing that characterization, and his spokesperson said the President would not dismiss Noem. The meeting coincided with Trump’s decision to dispatch border czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis—bypassing the usual chain and leaving Customs and Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino to return to El Centro, California. Gov. Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey met Homan, promising no enforcement of federal immigration laws. Republican lawmakers have called for an investigation, amid claims that over 3 000 Minnesota residents were arrested following the incident.
