Nobel Institute Reaffirms Prize Cannot Be Shared, Rejects Machado Trump Claim

On 11 January 2026 the Norwegian Nobel Institute clarified that the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, cannot be revoked, transferred or shared once announced. Machado had previously announced a desire to give the award to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly expressed interest in winning the prize himself. The Institute’s statement, issued in Oslo, reaffirmed that the award decision is irrevocable and stands forever. Despite reports of Machado dedicating the prize to Trump and the Venezuelan people, the Nobel Committee maintains that the recipient choice is final. The claim that Machado could hand the award to Trump is therefore rejected.
