On January 24, 2026, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro issued a power warning ahead of Saturday evening outages. Its warning follows the first shutdown of the Bay d'Espoir hydro plant since 1967 after frazil ice blocked water intakes, making the island’s largest generating facility offline. Collett, Hydro’s vice‑president, said the system could enter a “tightest pinch” this evening, with rotating outages of up to 60 minutes per community if supply drops. Current island capacity sits at 1,400 MW, with roughly 700 MW supplied by Muskrat Falls. Hydro is divers cleaning ice and seeking imports from Nova Scotia via the Maritime Link, while also tapping New England, Quebec and transmission reservations for a brief boost.
