Nipah Virus in India Spur Asian Airport Checks
Two Nipah cases in India trigger temperature screening at Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia airports.

On 28 January 2026, news outlets reported that two cases of the highly lethal Nipah virus were found in West Bengal, India, in late December. The Indian health ministry said the cases had been contained and traced 196 contacts, all testing negative. The World Health Organization warns a fatality rate of 40‑75 %. The first recognized outbreak occurred in Malaysia in 1999, followed by annual reports in Bangladesh since 2001. In 2007 five people died in West Bengal, making these the first cases in the region in almost twenty years. Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia have begun temperature screening at airports for passengers coming from affected areas; Nepal has put its travel system on high alert, and China warns of potential importations.
