New York City subway MetroCard to be retired

The New York City subway system's MetroCard, which has been swiped by millions of riders daily for the past 32 years, will be officially retired on December 31, 2025. Introduced in 1993, the MetroCard replaced the city's token system and became an iconic part of NYC transit culture. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is retiring the MetroCard as part of its transition to the OMNY contactless payment system, which launched in 2019. OMNY allows riders to tap credit/debit cards, smartphones, or wearable devices to pay fares. The MTA reports that OMNY usage has grown rapidly, with over 23 million taps recorded in 2024. While MetroCards can still be purchased until the end of December, the MTA encourages riders to switch to OMNY for faster, more convenient fare payment.
