New NHS Bowel Cancer Test Could Save Thousands
England’s NHS has rolled out a new immunochemical test that promises to detect bowel cancer earlier, potentially saving thousands of lives.

On 26 January 2026, the NHS announced a major upgrade to the England bowel cancer screening programme, replacing the old faecal immunochemical test (FIT) with a more sensitive immunochemical FIT kit. The change means that screening invitations will now use a swab‑based sample, improving accuracy and reducing false negatives. Experts say the enhanced test could save up to 5,000–7,000 lives each year by catching cancer earlier. The rollout covers over 12 million adults aged 60–69 and 30 million aged 70–74, and will run until 2030 to replace the current FIT schedule. The upgrade reflects the NHS’s commitment to early detection and better outcomes for patients.
