Nearly $7M Spent on Edgewood Ostrich Cull
Federal officials reveal $6.81M spent on culling 300 ostriches in Edgewood, B.C. after avian flu.

Federal data released in January 2026 shows that the government spent $6.81 million on the December 2024 cull of roughly 300 ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, B.C. After highly pathogenic avian flu was detected, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) ordered the kill, spending $1.596 million, while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spent $3.834 million on security and personnel and the Department of Justice paid $1.380 million in legal fees. The operation drew protests from supporters and US figures Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz. MP Scott Anderson criticized the taxpayer cost, noting the RCMP deployment cost over $3.8 million. Legal challenges by the farm failed, and a $10,000 fine was imposed for delayed reporting.
