NDP Leadership Candidates Differ as Membership Deadline Looms
Candidates show distinct platforms as they scramble to sign members before the March vote deadline.

Canada's NDP leadership race is tightening as candidates push membership sign‑ups up to Wednesday night, the deadline for the March ballot. Five frontrunners vie for the federal role — Heather McPherson, Avi Lewis, Rob Ashton, Tanille Johnston, Tony McQuail. McPherson pledged to repair ties with provincial NDP wings, while Lewis’s campaign has raised over $900,000 and drew 600‑strong crowds at Toronto’s Lee’s Palace. Ashton stresses the party’s labour heritage, and Johnston champions guaranteed livable income, with McQuail spotlighting environmental policy. The entrance fee remains $100,000. The race will decide leadership before the March election, with candidates highlighting differences in policy and outreach strategy.
