In early January 2026, the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin’s subsidiary Oneida ESC Group terminated a US$3.8 million federal contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for engineering and inspection of federal facilities after tribal authorities condemned the agreement. Just a month earlier, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation in Kansas cancelled a US$29.9 million ICE contract covering planning and design of secure structures and removed senior corporate officers. Both decisions followed community protests and raised questions about the appropriateness of tribally‑owned businesses receiving no‑bid federal contracts under the 8(a) program. Analysts note that Alaska Native corporations, such as NANA Regional Corporation’s Akima unit, also hold similar contracts, while experts warn of legal and ethical conflicts.
