National Police Federation Slams Alberta Next Panel Report on RCMP Replacement
RCMP union criticizes Alberta government panel report as 'misleading' over provincial police recommendations.

The National Police Federation, representing RCMP members, has strongly criticized Alberta's Next Panel report released December 18, 2025, calling it "misleading" and "politically driven." The panel, led by Premier Danielle Smith, recommended continuing Alberta's plan to replace RCMP contract policing with a provincial police force, citing 500 unfilled positions (about 1/6 of officers) and claiming Ottawa will retreat from provincial policing by 2032. However, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux countered that Mounties actually patrol 95% of Alberta's geography and 40% of its population, not the 20% cited in the report. The RCMP also reported receiving over 4,600 applications since April 2024. The Alberta government stated it's reviewing the recommendations while building its Alberta Sheriffs Police Service to augment existing law enforcement.
