NASA Gears Up for First Crewed Lunar Mission in Half a Century
NASA announces rollout of Space Launch System and Orion, advancing the first crewed moon mission since 1972.

On January 17, 2026 NASA announced it will roll out the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft, moving the United States closer to a crewed lunar mission – the first such endeavor since Apollo 17 in 1972. The SLS will launch from Launch Complex 39B at Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying a four‑person crew on the upcoming Artemis mission, slated for 2028. The program, led by NASA Administrator Mike Collins, aims to return humans to the Moon and establish a sustainable presence through the 2030s, marking a new era of deep‑space exploration.
