Leicestershire Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of 66-year-old David Darke, who died in hospital on Saturday, December 27, 2025, six days after being punched outside The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, North West Leicestershire. The incident occurred around 9:45 PM on December 21, 2025, when Darke sustained a serious head injury after being punched while outside the pub. A 36-year-old man initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder. Detective Inspector Kevin Hames confirmed that investigators have identified witnesses and examined CCTV footage, with ongoing inquiries and re-interviews planned. Specialist officers are supporting Darke's family during this difficult time.
