Federal officer shoots a man in the leg in Minneapolis after being attacked with a shovel and broom handle.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14 2026, a U.S. federal officer shot a man in the leg during an arrest in Minneapolis after the suspect—identified as a Venezuelan and in the U.S. illegally—attacked the officer with a shovel and a broom handle. Three additional attackers from a nearby apartment also assaulted the officer. DHS said the man had crashed into a parked car and fled before the chase ended. The officer fired a defensive shot; the victim is hospitalized with a non‑life‑threatening injury. The incident occurred about 7.2 km north of the Jan. 7 site where ICE agent Rene Good was killed. The city's 600‑officer police force faces a federal presence estimated five times larger, with DHS reporting more than 2,000 arrests in Minnesota since early December.
