Today marks 12 years since seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher suffered catastrophic injuries in a skiing accident in Meribel, France on December 29, 2013. The German racing icon, then aged 44, fell while skiing off-piste and struck his head on a rock, causing severe brain trauma. According to reports, Schumacher sent his wife Corinna a text message moments before the accident warning her he was going to attempt a dangerous run. He was airlifted to Grenoble University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and remained in a medically-induced coma for six months. Schumacher's condition has remained private since his discharge from hospital in 2014, with the family maintaining strict privacy about his recovery. The accident ended the career of one of motorsport's most successful drivers who had won 91 Grand Prix races across 19 seasons.
