Manchester United has reached a verbal agreement with former midfielder Michael Carrick to take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on 6 Jan 2026. Negotiations concluded late Monday night, 12 Jan, with lawyers finalising paperwork; Carrick could sign Tuesday afternoon. The club aims to have him in charge by end of Tuesday to prepare for the Manchester derby against Liverpool on Saturday, 15 Jan. Carrick, 44, managed Middlesbrough in 2022‑23 and won five Premier League titles with United. He previously filled in for the first team and will replace caretaker Darren Fletcher. United are 7th in the Premier League and aim for European qualification.
