Menefee Wins Houston House Seat, Narrowing GOP Majority

On Jan. 31, 2026, Democrat Christian Menefee, the 37‑year‑old Harris County attorney, won a runoff against former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards in Texas’s 18th House district. The seat had been vacant since Rep. Sylvester Turner’s March 2025 death. Menefee’s victory narrows the GOP’s narrow House majority. He pledged universal health insurance, to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and to dismantle ICE operations. Endorsed by Beto O’Rourke and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Menefee will serve the remainder of Turner’s term until a new Congress convenes in Jan. 2027. The district’s win follows a 16‑candidate primary postponed by Gov. Greg Abbott’s schedule and delayed voting amid winter weather.
