Mandelson Told Epstein He Was Trying Hard to Change Bonus Tax After Payment
Peter Mandelson told Epstein he’d try to change bank bonus tax after Epstein paid £10k to his husband.

Emails released by the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday shed new light on the close ties between former UK business secretary Peter Mandelson and convicted sex‑trader Jeffrey Epstein. The documents show that in September 2009 Epstein wired £10,000 to Mandelson’s husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, to fund an osteopathy course. A few days later, Mandelson, then business secretary in Gordon Brown’s government, replied that he was “trying hard” to amend the 50 % super tax on bankers’ bonuses, a measure announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling on 9 December 2009. The emails, dated 15 December 2009, ask Epstein if the policy could be changed to tax only the cash portion of bonuses. Mandelson’s promise came amid growing scrutiny of his ties to Epstein and he was sacked as ambassador to Washington in 2025.
