Man dies after tree falls on to caravan during Storm Goretti

A man aged in his 50s was found dead inside a caravan on a Mawgan road in Helston, Cornwall, after a tree fell onto it during Storm Goretti on Thursday 9 January 2026. Emergency services were called at about 19:35, and work to remove the tree continued into Friday. The incident happened in the aftermath of severe gales that knocked down trees in Penryn, Falmouth, St Stephen and Porthleven, and left roughly 27,000 South‑West properties, 2,300 in the West Midlands and 300 in the East Midlands without power on Saturday morning. The National Grid reported these outages at 9 am on 10 January, and Downing Street offered support to affected homes.
