Man Charged With Impersonating FBI Agent in Bid to Free Luigi Mangione
Mark Anderson arrested after claiming to be an FBI agent to release Luigi Mangione.

On 29 January 2026 a Minnesota resident, Mark Anderson, 36, was arrested at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after claiming to be an FBI agent holding a court order to release Luigi Mangione, 27. Mangione faces murder charges for the 4 December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Anderson supplied a Minnesota driver’s licence and threatened weapons, but officers found only a barbecue fork and a pizza‑cutter‑shaped steel blade in his bag. The attempt followed a New York district attorney’s letter urging Judge Gregory Carro to set Mangione’s trial for 1 July. Mangione’s case is now set for federal court hearings, with jury selection on 8 September and a possible death‑penalty decision pending.
