On the early hours of 6 September 2023, 39‑year‑old Robert Bromell was struck by an ambulance on Corran Esplanade, A85, Oban, Argyll and Bute, and died the following day. 22‑year‑old Lewis Budge was arrested, charged and now pleaded guilty to culpable homicide at Glasgow High Court. The case follows a Police Scotland investigation, with Inspector Gerry Shovlin describing the act as “shocking and senseless” and urging that such violence be condemned. Bromell’s family, who described him as a jovial “Hogan”, have publicly expressed deep grief and heartbreak over the loss.
