Former Labour chief and FA president David Triesman dies after a quiet battle with illness.

David Triesman, 82, former Labour Party general secretary, Foreign Office minister and under‑secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, died peacefully at his home on 31 January 2026. His death was announced by Labour’s statement, noting his role as a trade union leader, academic, merchant banker and long‑serving member of the House of Lords since 2004. Triesman was a key architect of New Labour, a patron of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and the first independent chair of the Football Association, where he fought racism and championed women’s football. Labour leader Keir Starmer, former PM Tony Blair and fellow Lords members expressed grief, calling him a vital part of the party and a great friend. He is survived by wife Lucy and daughter Ilona.
