Lib Dems demand crackdown on unsolved car thefts as motorists 'deserve so much better'
Liberal Democrats call for government action after Metropolitan Police solved only 12% of car crime incidents last year

The Liberal Democrats are calling on the UK government to tackle car crime after data revealed that the Metropolitan Police solved just 12% of car crime incidents in 2025. The party accused the Labour government of letting motorists down and demanded a tougher approach to vehicle theft. According to Metropolitan Police figures, out of over 50,000 car crime reports in 2025, only 6,000 resulted in arrests or charges. The Lib Dems cited research from the RAC showing that one in three drivers worry about car theft, calling the current situation a 'disgrace'. The party is pushing for increased police resources, better technology for tracking stolen vehicles, and harsher penalties for repeat offenders. The Metropolitan Police attributed the low solve rate to resource constraints and the complexity of modern car theft methods involving relay attacks on keyless entry systems.
