Ley Temporarily Assigns Nationals’ Frontbench Roles, Keeps Coalition Debate Open

On 30 January 2026, Opposition Leader Sussan Ley announced that the shadow positions vacated by the Nationals would be temporarily taken over by Liberal shadow ministers for the next parliamentary week beginning Tuesday. Ley said the acting assignments would end before the second February sitting week, by Monday 9 February, when she would appoint new Liberal shadow ministers. The move gives the Nationals—led by David Littleproud—time to consider re‑unifying the Coalition, although Ley warned that if they fail to act, she will install new Liberal ministers before the following week, which would complicate any rapprochement. The temporary responsibilities were handed to key Liberals: Ted O’Brien (treasury), Michaelia Cash (foreign affairs), Anne Ruston (health), Dan Tehan (energy), James McGrath (state), Angus Taylor (defence) and Angie Bell (environment). The decision follows a stalled leadership meeting between Andrew Hastie and Angus Taylor.
