Labour NEC Blocks Andy Burnham, Party Divides
Labour’s NEC blocked Andy Burnham’s bid to re‑enter Parliament, igniting party divisions.

On 25 January 2026, the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) voted 8‑1 to reject Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s bid to become a Member of Parliament in a forthcoming by‑election. The decision, made just 40 minutes after the announcement, was driven by concerns that a local by‑election would divert resources from critical Scottish, Welsh and local polls, and that a Reform‑led challenge could split the party at a crucial time. Only Deputy Labour Leader Lucy Burnham and MP Neil Duncan‑Jordan voted for Burnham; Chair Shabana Mahmood abstained. MPs on the left took to X, calling the move “authoritarian factionalism” and warning it could “tear the party apart”, while supporters of Prime Minister Keir Starmer feared the block would cost him backing from the soft left.
