Labour finalises sweeping road safety plan to cut deaths by 65% as rising fatalities prompt action

Labour has unveiled a new Road Safety Strategy that aims to cut deaths and serious injuries on UK roads by 65% within 10 years (by 2036). The plan follows a rise in road fatalities, prompting the party to introduce a sweeping set of measures including stricter speed limits, improved junction safety and enhanced driver training. Announced on 10 January 2026, the strategy targets a 35% reduction in deaths and a 20% drop in serious injuries, with a projected 70,000 fewer fatalities over the decade. Implementation will involve investment in safer road infrastructure and increased enforcement. The plan will be monitored by the Department for Transport and expected to be funded through a £x million budget.
