Kwame Brathwaite, the influential New York photographer credited with shaping the visual identity of the 'Black is Beautiful' movement, died on April 1, 2023, at the age of 85. Born in 1938 to Barbadian immigrants in Brooklyn, Brathwaite co-founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) and created the Grandassa Models to celebrate Black beauty. He pioneered lighting and darkroom techniques that enhanced how Black skin appeared in photography. His work documented jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane, as well as the 1962 'Naturally '62' fashion show. Brathwaite also photographed the Jackson 5's African tour and the 1974 'Rumble in the Jungle' boxing match. His first major retrospective debuted at the Skirball Cultural Center in 2019, and an exhibition 'Kwame Brathwaite: Things Well Worth Waiting For' was on view at the Art Institute of Chicago through July 24, 2023.
