Kelp-Growing Clay Pots Create Underwater Art in NS

Nova Scotia student Kit Tymoshuk blends pottery and conservation, making clay pots from over 5 kg of wild clay from Stewiacke and Annapolis Royal. After receiving a $5,000 grant from Ocean Wise, Tymoshuk fired the pots in a backyard kiln, then placed kelp spores into them at Dalhousie University’s Aquatron laboratory. Within five weeks baby kelp emerged, and the pots were dropped into the waters of Cranberry Cove—near Peggys Cove—in December 2025. The project serves as both a kelp‑restoration effort and a unique underwater art installation, hoping future snorkelers will monitor growth and enjoy the kelp‑laden art pieces.
