Kashechewan water crisis: 63 infected, evacuation underway

On Jan. 29 2026, officials confirmed cryptosporidium in Kashechewan First Nation’s water treatment plant, with 63 residents testing positive. Chief Hosea Wesley declared a state of emergency after pumps failed, prompting the evacuation of nearly all 2,300 residents to hotels in Timmins, Kapuskasing, Kingston and Niagara Falls. Only 32 families, about 370 people, remain on site. Indigenous Services Canada approved $8.4 million on Dec. 4 2025 to study relocation. The crisis evokes memories of a 2005 E. coli outbreak that affected the community.
