Kashechewan: 19 Positive Cases of Cryptosporidium

On Jan. 4, 2026, Kashechewan First Nation in northern Ontario declared a state of emergency after its water‑treatment plant stopped working due to defective pumps. The evacuation began soon thereafter and hundreds of residents have been removed from the community. Indigenous Services Canada, Ontario Public Health and the Northeastern Public Health Unit are investigating the cause of a new health issue. Twenty‑one tests were run and 19 people were confirmed to have the parasite cryptosporidium, which causes diarrhea and stomach pain. The source of the contamination remains unknown; E. coli was not detected in water or stool samples. Community leader Tyson Wesley urged federal and provincial support while repairs and new testing continue.
