Judge Orders Release of 5‑Year‑Old Boy & Father
5‑year‑old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father are freed from Texas detention after judge’s order.

Five‑year‑old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, were detained by U.S. immigration agents on Jan. 20 in Minneapolis after returning from preschool. The Ecuadorian asylum seekers were taken to a Texas detention center in Dilley. Judge Fred Biery ordered their release “as soon as practicable” and no later than Feb. 3. On Feb. 1 the pair flew from San Antonio back to Minneapolis, reuniting with mother and brother. ICE officials claimed the father abandoned the child, a charge the family denies. Conejo Arias says he sought asylum to escape danger in Ecuador and hopes to stay in the U.S. with his family.
