Josh Cavallo accuses Adelaide United of homophobia
Former A‑League star claims club sidelined him for his sexuality.

Josh Cavallo, 26‑year‑old Australian midfielder, became the first elite footballer to publicly identify as gay in October 2021. He now accuses former club Adelaide United of internal homophobia, alleging the club sidelined him during the 2024‑25 season and blocked his national selection. Cavallo left Adelaide in 2025 to join Stamford AFC in the UK, citing a hostile team‑chat that mocked him. Adelaide United issued a statement rejecting the claim, saying all squad decisions were based on footballing reasons. Cavallo, who played for Australia U19 and sought a World Cup spot, announced his engagement to partner Leighton Morrell in 2024 on the club’s home ground and was named Attitude Awards “Man of the Year” in 2022.
