Iran's Foreign Minister Threatens U.S. Over Protest Crackdown

On Jan. 21 2026, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi issued a direct threat to the United States, vowing retaliation after Tehran’s violent crackdown on protestors left more than 4,519 dead and 26,300 arrested, according to human‑rights monitors. Araghchi cited the 12‑day war with Israel in June 2025 and warned that Iran’s short‑ and medium‑range missiles could target U.S. bases in the Gulf if an attack occurs. Meanwhile, an Iranian drone and missile strike on a Kurdish separatist base near Irbil—some 320 km north of Baghdad—killed one fighter and was the republic’s first foreign operation since the protests began. The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is moving westward from the South China Sea, while Iran shut airspace on Jan. 14 in anticipation of a potential assault.
