International Space Station astronauts back after first emergency return

On 15 January 2026, the SpaceX Crew Dragon Endeavour returned four astronauts—NASA’s Zena Cardman, Mike Fincke, Japan’s Kimiya Yui, and Russia’s Oleg Platonov—after a serious medical issue arose on 7 January and forced an early crew cut‑off. The capsule left the International Space Station and splashed down in the Pacific off San Diego more than 11 hours later, marking the first emergency evacuation from the orbiting laboratory. NASA withheld the identity of the sick crew member and said the astronaut “does fine”. The ISS will continue operations with a skeleton crew and a new 4‑person crew scheduled to launch in mid‑February.
