In January 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit would travel to Italy to aid U.S. security during the Milano‑Cortina Winter Olympics, scheduled Feb. 6‑22. The HSI team will operate out of a control room at the U.S. Consulate in Milan, working alongside the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service and Italian authorities to vet and mitigate risks from trans‑national criminal groups. The announcement sparked backlash in Italy, with protests outside the U.S. Embassy in Rome and criticism from Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala, who said ICE would not be welcome in the host city. The move is not new; ICE has previously supported U.S. delegations overseas at major sporting events.
