ICE agent fatally shoots woman in vehicle during operations in Minneapolis: DHS

On Jan. 7, 2026, an ICE agent fatally shot a U.S. citizen in a vehicle during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis. City Council member Jason Chavez said the woman was an observer watching for immigrant neighbors, but DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed she was “attempting to run over our law‑enforcement officers.” The incident occurred near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, prompting Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to demand ICE leave the city. Governor Tim Walz said his office was gathering information. The Department of Homeland Security, led by Secretary Kristi Noem, called the event an “act of domestic terrorism.” The city warned residents to avoid the area. A total of up to 2,000 ICE and HSI agents were slated for deployment in the Twin Cities.
