Hybrid Cars Three Times Deadlier Than Petrol and Diesel Models
Hybrid vehicles pose greater risk of fire and road fatalities, analysis shows

A new analysis reveals hybrid cars are three times more likely to cause road fatalities compared to petrol and diesel vehicles, with data showing 15.8 deaths per 100,000 hybrid vehicles versus 5.2 for petrol-only models. Released on December 28, 2025, the findings highlight safety concerns around heavier hybrid construction and battery-related fire risks. The study examined UK road accident data over the past five years, finding hybrid vehicles were disproportionately involved in fatal crashes and had significantly higher rates of post-accident fires. Experts attribute the increased danger to the additional weight from battery packs and complex electrical systems, which can compromise vehicle handling and create hazardous conditions during collisions. The report calls for stricter safety standards and improved emergency response training for hybrid vehicle incidents.
