Human remains found as Australia continues to battle bushfires
Victim remains found near vehicle in Longwood amid Victoria bushfire crisis.

On 11 January 2026, police in Victoria discovered the remains of an unidentified individual beside a vehicle in Longwood, roughly 70 miles north of Melbourne, while the state battles a massive bushfire outbreak. Since mid‑week, the fire‑storm has consumed more than 860,000 acres of heathland, destroyed over 300 structures, and left thousands without power. Victoria’s premier Jacinta Allan confirmed that more than 30 fires were burning across the state; the Australian Weather Service warned that the blaze could persist until temperatures rise again. Mr Hardman, Victoria’s chief fire officer, told the ABC that suppression would take weeks. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged emergency funding for affected residents.
