Horse Rescued From Frozen Creek Near Cochin, Sask., Earns New Name Frosty

On 9 January 2026, a wandering horse, now named Frosty, was rescued from a frozen creek between Jackfish Lake and Murray Lake near the resort village of Cochin, Saskatchewan. Local residents reported the animal at about 9:20 a.m.; Cochin Mayor Mark Pattinson and friend Ed Scott found the horse in roughly four feet of ice and cold water, unable to pull to shore. After manual attempts failed, a Jeep equipped with a winch was summoned. The horse was winched out of the ice within thirty minutes, though it remained exhausted and coated in ice. Volunteers offered feed, bandages and financial aid while a farmer transported Frosty to the Lakeland veterinary clinic in North Battleford for treatment.
